Orange Sesame Tofu



This citrus infused tofu is so delicious that even people who claim they dislike the taste of tofu help themselves to seconds whenever I make this.  It is best to prepare this dish well in advance to let the tofu marinate in the citrus juices which transforms the tofu into an orange and sesame flavour bomb! 

For 3 servings
  • 1 package of firm, or extra firm tofu, cut into 1cm cubes
  • ½ cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari 
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons ginger, minced
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil 
  • 1 orange zested
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch or rice flour
  • 1 teaspoon of sesame seeds 
  • 2 scallions chopped
Method

  1. Mix the starch with two tablespoons of orange juice so that it dissolves. 
  2. In a sauce pan, combine the starch, the remainder of the orange juice, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, zest, and tofu, making sure that the tofu is well coated in the mixture.  
  3. Chill, and set aside at least one hour for the flavours to mature.  
  4. After an hour, heat the tofu on a stovetop over medium heat, stirring gently as to not break the tofu cubes.  The starch will begin to congeal within a 3-5 minutes and you will be left with thick, orange paste with tofu in it. 
  5. Remove from heat and serve over fried or steamed rice, with the sesame seeds and scallions as a garnish.
