Fresh turmeric root is a natural remedy for inflammation and also contains antioxidants. The bright yellow spice has been used in Indian ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for centuries both externally and internally.
Here in Bali, if someone has a skin irritation, it is often recommended that they smear a fresh turmeric root on their blemish. Because of this, it is not uncommon to see people with yellow stained skin here.

Turmeric can be paired with any fruit that you like. Balinese people like to pair it with lemon and honey, but since honey is not vegan, any natural sweetener, like maple syrup, agave, or palm sugar can be used. Here is my favourite recipe:
Warning: Wear gloves or else your fingers will turn yellow!
- 3 small turmeric roots
- One-inch knob of ginger
- Sweetener to taste
- Half a papaya or cantaloupe for texture and fibre
- Water to ease the blending process
- Optional: your favourite “milk” (soy, almond, cashew) if a creamy texture is desired.
Method
- Skin the turmeric and ginger, place them in the blender, and add water, just enough to cover them.
- Pulp them into a slurry and add papaya or cantaloupe, adding a bit more water to ease the blending process.
- Blend all of the ingredients to a desired consistency, sweeten to taste and if a creamy texture is desired, add a splash of your favourite “milk” alternative. Serve in a chilled glass.
